A Challenge Declined

The wind was just a nice breeze. Me and my friends were playing Truth of Dare during our monthly hour-long recess. Everyone was ready, except for one girl named Elizabeth, who was walking towards us with this guy named Eric. Both were across the thin road and talking about something, hopefully not me.

“Lynn, Truth or Dare?” turned my attention away the pair. It was Diane who asked the question, who had unruly brown hair and purplish glasses.

“Truth.” I answered, which was maybe a safe choice.

“Who is your second crush, after Eric?” I blushed. Of course, every 6th grade Olympian knew about that.

“Carter.” I replied, my face feeling very warm. My friends snickered. “My turn.” I looked around for my victim. “Erin. Truth or Dare?”

“LYNN!” I whipped my head around to find Elizabeth running over to me. I jumped down from the stone ‘bleachers’ and joined her.

“What is it?” I asked.

“I dared Eric to kiss you. He said n-.” She replied, but I cut her short, by yelling “ELIZABETH! WHY DID YOU DO THAT?!”

My face had to be redder than bloody tomato. I suddenly felt a bit light-headed and just wanted to hide. “I’m not ready for that!”

“He said no. I said he had to do it or he was chickening. He walked away, saying he didn’t care.” Elizabeth said, our friends walking over.

“Elizabeth, what did you do?” Diane asked.

She told her what happened. Diane replied with what I said. “Well, on with the game.” I said, my hands still shaking.

I looked at Erin. “Truth or Dare?”

“Truth.”

“If you were stuck on an island, who would you pick in the entire school to be stranded with?”

Erin thought for awhile. “Ms. Europe. She seems resourceful.” Shen went on to Abby, then me again.

“Truth or Dare, Lynn?” Abby asked.

“Truth.”

“Why do you like Eric?”

“I just do. It’s my turn still.” I said quickly. Eric was walking over to us. He stopped and started talking to Elizabeth.

“Diane, Truth or Dare?”

“Dare.” She said, grinning mischievously.

“I dare you to hug a guy in the area.” I nodded towards Eric, who looked up with fearful eyes.

A soft “Crap.” was heard. He dashed off, his yellow-green polo clearly seen in the field of dark colors.

“Heh.” I muttered as Diane went to hug a tree.
